Iraq Energy Institute (IEI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Gareth Stansfield as the new President of IEI from December 2021. As Honorary President, Prof. Stansfield will provide leadership to IEI’s initiatives to further research and educational collaboration with multinational institutions. His role will also support building the “Energy Transition & Climate Change” program for Iraq.

Prof. Stansfield has a successful history within IEI as a Distinguished Fellow and has played a key role in supporting Iraq Energy Forums and Public Policy reform recommendations. Stansfield holds many senior and academic positions including the Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of the College of Social Sciences and International Studies at the University of Exeter, where is also a Professor of Middle East Politics and the Al-Qasimi Chair of Arab Gulf Studies. He has previously served as the Director of the University’s Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies – one of the leading institutes of its kind in the world for the study of the Middle East and North Africa region. This is besides his senior fellowships and affiliations with various institutions. Also, a regular commentator and adviser on Middle East politics over the last decade, focusing in particular on the politics and political economy of Iraq.
