His Excellency Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo began his tenure as Secretary-General of the OPEC on 1 August 2016. He held several key roles at OPEC since becoming Nigeria's Delegate to the OPEC Ministerial Conferences. [read more="Read More >" less="<<"] From 1993 to 2008, he became Nigeria's national representative on OPEC's Economic Commission Board (ECB). Later from 2009 to 2010, he was Nigeria's Governor for OPEC. In 2006, he served as acting OPEC Secretary-General where he chaired the ECD. From 1992, he served in various capacities in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) becoming the Group's Managing Director and CEO of NNPC. Earlier, he was the Deputy Managing Director of Nigerian Liquified Natural Gas. Dr Barkindo led Nigeria's technical delegations to the climate change negotiations since their inception in 1991. He contributed to efforts that saw the production of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Koyoto Protocol to the UNFCCC. He was the only Nigerian delegate to attend all 15 Conferences of the Parties (COPs). He holds an honours BSc in Political Science from Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria and a Post Graduate Diploma in Petroleum Economics, Oxford, United Kingdom. Also, has an MBA in Finance and Banking from Washington University in the United States. Dr Barkindo was a fellow at George Mason University from 2013 to 2016 where he undertook research in the field of energy, climate change and sustainable development.
